Dial Down Your Expertise

When you go to a project meeting, do you see yourself as an expert? Or perhaps you see yourself as the leader, facilitator or director?

For your next meeting, try dealing back on your expertise and advice. Imagine a ten point scale where 10 = expert. Try dealing your approach down to very low numbers. Imagine for a moment that you have the lowest level of knowledge and, not only that, you don’t even know what the key areas of discussion are.

This may be a tough mindset but that is exactly how we in the consultancy and coaching field have to exist every day. We are always surrounded by people who know more than us and who have a deep understanding of the problems and issues.

We cannot rely on knowledge to make progress, we have to work with questions and challenges.

So for your next meeting try dealing back on your expertise, Ask questions of the team and imagine them as experts. Ask them what they need to discuss, what they see as the key challenges. Manage the discussion
